Shake & Dance to Relax and Heal

I’d like to share something I just learned from my chiropractor. After the holidays and a lot of tense winter weather driving, I was having a hard time getting my body to relax. I do know how to relax but my body wasn’t responding as completely as I would have liked. There was too much stored stress and I was stuck in fight/flight mode.

My chiropractor related something she recently learned about how certain animals that are being chased will go into a sort of “paralysis.” An opossum would be an example. If the animal survives the encounter, it comes out of the paralysis by vigorously shaking it’s body, thereby releasing the stress tension.

Humans have this problem when we are constantly stressed. We hold in the tension and find it hard to let it go. Muscles and connective tissues hang onto that tension and it can build up over time.

After my chiropractor told me this story, I went home and gave myself a really good shake, and I felt so much better. Dancing would do the same thing, which is what my chiropractor prescribed, but a whole body shake worked for me.

So when you’re stressed either put on some music and vigorously dance around, or just get up and shake, shake, shake your body! Then sit down and take some deep breaths through your nose and you will feel yourself relax.
